It was intense, it was sweaty, I was fully present and engaged. It was a master class, and as expected, the energy in the space was high and I was at that point within it where my mind and body were best described as “mush.” I was ready for a great savasana, and then the instructor asked for hanumanasana, a.k.a; full split, or more affectionately known as monkey pose!
Suddenly, the practice went to my head, and my mind had a lot to say about it;
“I can’t do the splits! Who does he think he is? More importantly, who does he think I am?” I reached for my blocks and proceeded to engage this (then seemingly insane) posture when “he” came to take my supports, my only confidence, away from me, saying, “You don’t need these,” and continued to make bold adjustments. In that moment, while experiencing a test of physicality as well as shaken confidence, the monkey within me came forth and it spoke.
Why are you afraid?
Just relax and trust now.
There is nowhere to fall; there is nowhere to go.
You are here, be here. You are fine.
Let the earth support you in this new place of being.
Then slowly, with each breath, I found myself sinking deeper into this pose of impossibility, until there I was, fully extended! Within the time of engaging this once perceived impossible pose, I found the opposite truth within myself. As I engaged my breath and began to listen to my monkey, and the posture found me. Okay, it’s questionable that everyone’s higher consciousness shows up as a monkey guide. Call it what you like, mine was a monkey.
Engage your monkey!
Sometimes it knows best.
Relax, breathe, and trust.
Enjoy a new experience of being.
